Zodiac

In 2018, our team, a group of passionate and rapidly-growing game developers, embarked on our second project for Maverick: Zodiac. I was particularly excited about this game, as it allowed me to explore a theme close to my heart. The target market at the time was Southeast Asia, so we were tasked with creating a game with a Chinese/Asian aesthetic.

I wanted to push the boundaries of a typical Asian-themed slot game, so I drew inspiration from a beloved 90s cartoon, Eto Rangers, which featured a group of anthropomorphic animals who travel through time to save different timelines. I envisioned incorporating this concept as a recurring storyline in Maverick games, adding an Asian twist to popular Western stories.

I was deeply involved in this project from the outset, personally crafting majority of the asset sketch drafts, including the logo, symbols, and characters. I also envisioned incorporating the Great Wall of China into the background to add a sense of grandeur and historical significance. Our talented designers then took my sketches and vision and transformed them into stunning visuals.

Our lone frontend developer at the time not only handled the animations but also composed the music, showcasing his incredible versatility. Meanwhile, our master backend developer guided us in setting up and understanding the game engine, which was especially crucial since we were all relatively new to game development at the time.

I’m incredibly proud of how Zodiac turned out. It’s a testament to our team’s dedication, creativity, and collaborative spirit. We successfully blended a beloved childhood cartoon with a classic Asian theme, creating a unique and engaging gaming experience.

I did the content writing/storytelling for all our games. I leave you with the introduction excerpt I wrote for this game’s game sheet:
